What is the running standards award scheme?

The idea of the West End standards award scheme is to give runners in the club goal-based incentives to improve their race times.  Standards can also be a useful training tool to gauge improvement.

The scheme runs from 1st January to 31st December each year.

Runners will be awarded a certificate and medal appropriate to the standard achieved. Qualifying members need to apply for their standard by completing the standard claim form and sending it to the standards officer before mid-January (exact date will be announced each year).

How does it work?

There are time standards for each age group. Your age category is your age on race day. Therefore, if your birthday means you change category part way through a year, the standard times before your birthday must be for the lower age category, and times after your birthday for the higher age category.

To be awarded a standard you must complete at least five distances, to gain a distinction you must qualify for nine distances.  There are ten distances for you to select from - 5k, 5 miles, 6 miles, 10k, 7 miles, 8 miles, 10 miles, half marathon, 20 miles, and Marathon. The 50k distance is no longer applicable.

Please note when claiming a five distances standard, you must use at least one of the longer distances: 10 miles, Half Marathon, 20 miles, Marathon.

The achievement of qualifying race times must be in recognised athletic events with accurately measured courses.

The time must be listed on the race results (no watch times, race clock times, or Strava, etc. will be accepted).

Races must not be recognised as downhill on Power of 10 (indicated by DH after the distance, see Baxters Loch Ness Marathon for an example)

Commonly questioned races?

Some races are commonly questioned by members as to whether they count or not. The Club Standards Officer and committee have agreed:

The following races DO count:

Watermead Challenge 5 (on tarmac all the way and accurately measured and timed)

Edinburgh Marathon/ Edinburgh Half (although downhill to start, counts as a qualifier for London Marathon and is a recognised IAAF event, accurately measured and timed)

Leicestershire 10k Track Championships (accurately measured and timed)

Parkrun (5k) (does count despite not having a course measurement certificate, the local ones have been accurately measured, and there are not many 5ks that aren’t Parkruns, so the committee has agreed they all count)

The following races do NOT count:

Tissington Trail Half Marathon (no course measurement certificate and would class as downhill if it had one)

Club Awards

The awards for the club standards scheme will be given out at the presentation night. (Which usually takes place in January/February)

The award will consist of a corresponding medal and certificate for the achieved standard. The club will issue a special prize for anyone attaining the Diamond standard and also the Distinction award.

Please note: It would be helpful if runners keep records of their race results races so they can substantiate their standard claim.
