West End Runners was founded in 1984 as a “new breed” of running club with the aim of attracting members from a much wider range of abilities than the traditional Harrier style club.

By our 30th birthday, our membership had grown to over 120 members.

We have members of various standards and ages who take part in road running, cross country, fell, trail and triathlon events both at home and abroad. Some of our members have participated in Challenge events such as ThunderRun 24.

Members are supported and encouraged to develop their fitness and improve their running speed and ability through the range of quality sessions (speed sessions and hill reps, for example) available both on Monday at Saffron Lane athletics track and on Wednesday club night. Groups also do steady runs at a number of paces and distances on club night. The accredited Run Leaders and Coaches offer advice on training plans, stretching routines, nutrition and race strategies. We believe all our members, from beginners to runners who are placed in the top twenty in local league races, have the capacity to improve. Not all our members choose to compete, some prefer to run for their own fitness and the social side of club life.

Every year there is a Club expedition to Diggle for the 10 mile Saddleworth Cake Fell Race. (West End Runners love their cake!) This is a fun-filled weekend of running, socialising, eating cake and beautiful scenery.

West End Runners like to get involved in the local community and so support the weekly Braunstone parkrun and Aylestone Junior parkrun. Members also participated in a clean-up project of Leicester Canal as our home is based in Leicester Rowing Club.

West End Runners also like to support charities and every year participate in Rainbows 100 Lap Challenge at Saffron Lane Stadium, have participated in Lutterworth 5 mile Run for the Alzheimers Society and many members have chosen to raise funds for charities close to their hearts while completing their own running goals.

If West End Runners sounds like a Club you would like to be a part of, see our Frequently Asked Questions to find out more.
