About West End Runners

upper 2

West End Runners is a friendly running club based in the East Midlands city of Leicester. We have  approximately 100 members. We are an adult only club with a wide spread of ages twenties to seventies and the rest are somewhere inbetween.

The club was formed in March 1984 from humble beginnings. The original idea for the running club came from a community initiative between Norfolk Street Police Station and the City Council. The Club was self-consciously a “new breed” club that aimed to attract members across a wide range of abilities and not just from the faster elite, as with traditional Harrier style clubs.  This ethos remains today.

The first meeting took place in the back of the late Dave Lem's running shop, transfering a few weeks later to the West End Neighbourhood Centre. The jogging boom of the early 1980s, ensured the club grew quickly into a substantial running club. In 1999, the Club moved to its current headquarters in the purpose built sporting facilities at Leicester Rowing Club.

One of the initial aims of the club was to encourage road running of all kinds from 3 mile fun runs to full marathons and this is still true today with the club taking part in a large number of races and events including the Leicester Road Running League and the annual round Leicester relay race. Cross country running is also popular in winter with the club having strong representation in the Derby Runner Cross country League.

The clubs main running night is Wednesday when we meet at therowing clubaround 7:15 ready to run at 7:30.
